The connection between fika and nature, and the words of Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg

Fika and nature connection

It's been about 8 months since I started using Fikahuset.

Little by little, the Swedish custom of valuing tea time called ``Fika'' has spread around us, and I feel that more and more people are now taking the time to relax and enjoy tea every day. I'm imagining all sorts of things.

And the more fika spreads, the more I sometimes wonder what fika is.

Isn't the Swedish lifestyle of valuing nature deeply related to fika? That's what I came up with.

Swedish nature close to you

Approximately 60% of Sweden's land area is covered by forests such as pine, fir, and white birch, and an additional 10% of the country is blessed with natural beauty, including lakes and rivers.

Approximately 67% of Japan's land is covered by forests, so it feels like they are similar in terms of environment, but Sweden's land is very flat. There are no high mountains like in Japan, and the highest point in the north is only about 2000m above sea level.

There are endless grasslands, an endless sky, a forest, and beyond the forest is a beautiful lake that looks like the ocean.

The open scenery continues forever, so much so that you can see the horizon. When you visit Sweden, the first thing that strikes you is how vast the space is.

As a side note, when I came to Sweden from Tokyo, there was a lot of empty space and it was always dazzling. In the summer, sunglasses were necessary even when it was cloudy.

Another point is that nature is very close to us. If you drive for about 10 minutes from the city, you will immediately see this beautiful scenery.

Just like in a fairy tale, Swedes (as far as I know) pack their baskets and go to the nearby forest to pick mushrooms and berries, and when the weather is nice they have picnics by the lake and have fika. I enjoy it.

I feel that ``fika'' and ``nature'' are very familiar and connected.

Greta Thunberg

Greta Thunberg's words

Recently, the activities of 16-year-old Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg have been in the news.

When I listened to her speech, I could feel her intentions being truly conveyed, as each word was filled with a sense of urgency.

He speaks words that have the power to ``move people'' and make them want to do something for environmental issues.

Greta Thunberg

“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I'm one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing.”

“We are in the beginning of a mass extinction. And all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!”

“For more than 30 years the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you are doing enough, when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.”

Demonstration against global warming

“You stole my dreams and my childhood with your empty words, but I am still blessed.

Many people are suffering and many are dying. All ecosystems have been destroyed and we are at the beginning of a mass extinction.

Yet all you talk about is money and fairy tales about economic development lasting forever. Isn't it embarrassing?

For over 30 years, science has shown us clearly.

How can we ignore that fact and say that we are doing what we are supposed to do? The politics and solutions needed are nowhere to be found. ”

A portion of sales will be donated to a Swedish nature conservation organization.

At Fikahuset, we also want to support activities to protect nature, so we decided to donate a portion of our sales to a Swedish environmental protection organization.

The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation

It's really a small support, but I would like to do it little by little from what I can.
