Today is chocolate ball day

In Sweden, today is Chokladbollens Dag (Chocolate Ball Day).

Chocolate balls (Chokladbollar) are one of Sweden's traditional sweets.

It is very popular in Sweden because it is very easy to make and delicious.

There are many different recipes, but the basic one is to mix butter, oatmeal, cocoa, coffee, sugar, and vanilla extract into a ball and sprinkle it on coconut flakes.

Sometimes I use leftover sponge cake instead of oatmeal.

It's a highly satisfying snack with the rich taste of moist cacao balls and butter, and the aroma and taste of coffee as a slight accent.

The combination of oatmeal and the crunchy texture of coconut flakes is indescribably delicious.

Of course, this Swedish sweet goes perfectly with coffee.

Everyone loves chocolate balls

Swedish chocolate balls became popular during World War II in 1943.

The recipe was featured in Svenska Dagbladet (Swedish newspaper).

When you go to a cafe in Sweden, you'll always see these chocolate balls lined up in the showcase.

This photo was taken at a cute cafe in the Swedish town of Lidköping.

There are so many different types of sweets that I get excited just looking at them. It was difficult to choose just one.

Unfortunately, the pastry I chose was too sweet and I couldn't eat it all...

A moment of memory with family

Chocolate balls also seem to be a sweet that reminds you of time with your family.

Many Swedes probably have fond memories of making these chocolate balls with their moms, dads, grandmas, and grandpas when they were little and having fun together.

In fact, her husband often made chocolate balls with his mother.

When he made a lot, he would put some of the balls in the freezer and eat them like iced chocolate balls.

Chokladbollens Dag

Why is today (2019/5/11) Chocolate Ball Day?

I did a lot of research on its origin, but I couldn't find any useful information.

By chance, I came across an article about Alaine Handa, a Singaporean woman who has written a recipe book for over 30 types of chocolate balls.

Alaine Handa also loves fika and mentions Scandinavian life balance in her recipe book.

"In the book, Alaine Handa takes a social interception on chokladbollar. "

"She explains the book is more than recipes it is also about this concept of balanced life, that Scandinavian people seem to embrace with the concept of Danish hygge, Norwegian kos and Swedish fika – which is about taking some time out for yourself every day to relax either alone or in the company of others and have a cup of coffee and a nice treat – like chokladbollar."

A life with just the right balance, common in Northern Europe

"This book is more than just a recipe book; it's also about how to live a balanced life."

``For example, in Scandinavian countries, there are customs that symbolize a balanced life. Hygge from Denmark, Kos from Norway, and Fika from Sweden. ”

``Both of these phrases mean ``Let's make time to relax every day,'' and enjoy a cup of coffee and delicious sweets alone or with colleagues, friends, or family. With delicious snacks like chocolate balls, of course. ”

It was a heartwarming glimpse into the Swedish people's love for fika, that even a single chocolate ball can bring out so many wonderful stories.
